Ali Matalon

Ali Matalon is a 17 year old student of The Hillel Academy 6th form programme. She has always enjoyed writing- it is a break from her daily routine and it is something that she can do in her own time, with her own rules. She is inspired by her family and everyday life experiences. She was introduced to Spoken Word poetry over a year ago and soon fell in love. Spoken word poetry is poetry that is meant to be heard, it is a collection of words that must be said in order to be understood. Spoken word poetry allows the poet to express their feelings through their actions, how many breaths they take in between words and the way in which they say things. The audience is then able to find the true meaning of the poem and feel the emotions that the poet does. "Being able to share my feelings with people in such a creative manner has introduced me to a new type of adrenalin rush. I absolutely love it". She has performed at various venues in the past including Redbones. She is the winner of Redbones Writer's Award Competition 2011.

Andrew Burton

He considers himself a full time poet who has always maintained a part time day job that has him engaged in full time employment. From military service in the Jamaica Defence Force, to the aisles of a supermarket, to clerical administrative roles Andrew Burton has maintained that he is a writer. From the salubrious hills of Manchester, to the Liguanea plains of Kingston and St. Andrew his journeys though not always eventful, his musings are insightful enough to enable his pen to present perspectives that create images rich and thought provoking alike to keep a reader and a listener interested. He is a romantic, an adventurer.

A child of the late sixties, Andrew is two years plus into his new journey after when life begins. In late1992 while serving in the JDF he made a conscious effort to begin writing. He has been published twice in the JDF's magazine Alert, his first article winning him a third prize award. He has also served on the magazine committee on both occasions. During his retail employment he contributed regularly to a company specific newsletter and served as its editor towards the end of that service. He is most grateful for the persons who have touched his life and has had a role in unearthing his talents and the places that have facilitated his expressions. His simple philosophy is, now. Now is the only moment there is he often says.
